P90X Grocery Lists

We now have the P90X grocery lists available for download in Microsoft Word format. Click below to get them. Please let us know if we can improve upon them in any way, and happy P90X'ing.

A few tricks for understanding the shopping list (if you're already familiar with this from the individual grocery list posts, you can skip this part):

1. I color coded the items based on whether they are for breakfast only, snack only, lunch only, dinner only, or a general item. That way, if you don't want to make any of the lunch items, for example, you can easily take out the green-colored items you don't need.

2. If the ingredient is for a specific recipe, I included a shortened version of the recipe name in parenthesis at the end of the ingredient. Once again, if you don't want to make that recipe, you don't need to buy these items. If the ingredient's text color is black, it is used for more than just breakfast or lunch, etc.

3. If an item is italicized, that means it is an ingredient for a recipe that makes more than one serving. So the quantity is flexible depending on how many servings you really want to make. I did not include the recipes that make more than four servings, so I recommend that you consult the list in the book and see which of these recipes you want to make and then add the quantities you want.

4. I also included a list with the names of the recipes for each phase. These are also color-coded; show the page number the recipe is on; states how many servings they make if they make more than one; and, if I did not include the ingredients on the grocery list, that is stated as well.

I created the grocery list in Microsoft Word, that way it is easy to edit. Also, it is a grocery list for ONE PERSON for ONE WEEK using the "Meal Plan Approach" for Level I (except for Phase 1's grocery list is for Level II).

Hi Hiedi
I noticed that your grocery list changed levels from Level 2 for phase 1. Then Level 1 for phase 2 & 3. Is that information correct? If so why did you change?

Heidi said...

Yes, that is correct. We changed to Level 1 because we found that we had SO MUCH FOOD when we bought for Level 2.

Thanks Heidi,
I have been on the plan for a little more than a month now. The first month me & my wife bought a whole bunch of food, recovery drinks (GNC) and protein bars(GNC). I lost 11.5lbs in about a month. Then we went on a vacation with our kids and fell of the wagon. We tried to eat healthy, but without the convinence of our refrigerator it was tough. We're trying to get the grocery list correct to be able to better stick it it this month. Thanks again.

You guys obviously put a lot of work into this blog, and I really appreciate it. I found it to be a great resource not only with the grocery lists (although that in itself is amazing) but your overall encouragement too.

Thanks for this.

Hi Heidi

Thank you so much for putting this info together - it is very helpful!

Are you in Arizona by chance... Scottsdale area. I am looking for an assistant that is detail oriented such as yourself.

Lina,

I am glad you are able to use the grocery lists. :)

We don't live in Arizona, we live just south of Salt Lake City, Utah.

Heidi,

Hello,

Is this for level 1 or 2?

I am level 2

I'm about to begin in a few days and trying to get my stuff together and your list is putting my head back on my body. lol. good job and thanks for sharing!

Heidi said...

KGrace,

The grocery list for Phase 1 is for Level 2, but then the rest are for Level 1. We changed to Level 1 because we just had too much food when we bought for Level 2.

Good luck! :D

Hi, I am starting next Monday I saw you left some things off of your grocery list. Do you just not eat those things or how do you do that because there were several things left off? Vegetable soup, Pesto sauce, Balsamic vinaigrette, Honey-chile sauce, Coleslaw, Gazpacho and Mango-ginger sauce. Also I saw it was for level 2 do you not do Level 1, 2 and 3?

William said...

Also I do not like cottage cheese, would just a plain yogurt be fine?

Heidi said...

William,

I only itemized the ingredients for the recipes that made 4 servings or less. If the recipe makes more than this, such as the ones that you listed, I did not include the ingredients; but I also state in the document if the recipe was not included in the grocery list. The vegetable soup, for example, makes 20 servings and so I thought it would be better for people to decide on their own whether or not they wanted to buy for that recipe and if they wanted to downsize it or not.

I created the Phase 1 grocery list for Level 2 because it was the middle-ground--people could buy a little more or a little less depending on which level they wanted. But the grocery lists for Phase 2 and Phase 3 are for Level 1 because Jeremy and I found that we had so much extra food buying for Level 2.

Also, seeing as you don't like cottage cheese, I think yogurt would be fine. :)

Good luck with your workouts!

William said...

Thanks for your quick response, what about substituting the fishes and steaks. Is that a big deal as long as the portions are the same? For example Publix has Mahi MAhi on sale this week would it be ok to sub that out for the halibut or swordfish?

One more question, do you think it would be ok to switch the order around. For example eating Day 4 on Day 7 and Day 7 on Day 4? Are they in a set order based on what you need for that day and workout? Just wondering because I stay with my girlfriend on weekends and figured I could plan the weekend meals around what she likes.

Heidi said...

William,

I think it's fine to substitute foods as long as you are substituting them with equally healthy foods; however, I am not a Dietitian, so that's just my opinion. :) We did make some of our own substitutions and the program didn't seem impacted by that.

I also think it's fine to switch the order of the meals as long as it is a meal from the appropriate Phase you're doing in the workouts.

William said...

Gotcha, was that accelerade is that something you used instead of p90x recovery drink? Did you sub the protein bars or order from them?

Heidi said...

William,

I'm not sure what "accelerade" is that you're referring to, but we supplemented with Gatorade and other protein bars.

William said...

Is coffee ok? Or should I cut that out? I drink a 16oz cup black with 2 packets of splenda every morning

Heidi said...

William,
P90X recommends that you do not drink soda, coffee, or tea.

William said...

Hey Heidi, it's me again.. When you guys ate the Turkey burgers did you just eat them like a hamburger steak or did you get it with a bun?

Heidi said...

William,
We ate the turkey burgers like a hamburger steak. :)

hisworkinprogress said...

Hi I am trying to figure out your grocery list..I need phase 1 level 1..do you have that one? Thanks!

Heidi said...

hisworkinprogress,
We did not create Phase 1's grocery list for Level I, only for Level II. The foods are pretty much the same, just Level I has fewer recipes and a little less quantity.

Simon said...

Heidi,

AMAZING job doing all of this. One question though: I know you've said that you switched to level 1 on phase 2 and 3 due to excess food. If I'm supposedly a "level 2", will eating at a level 1 impact me all that much? Is the only difference how much food is consumed?

Heidi said...

Thanks, Simon! And you're right, Level II has some additional/different recipes to make up for the additional calories you're supposed to eat. So, if you eat from Level I you will consume fewer calories, which I don't think will negatively impact you unless, perhaps, you're trying to bulk up more.

Hi! Love the sight it is very helpful. I noticed that you began
P90X prior to being pregnant. I found out I was pregnant a few days ago and am in my 3rd week of P90X, do you think it is safe to continue? How long did you do P90X while pregnant. I'm already in fairly good physical shape so it's not quite so hard on my body. Thanks for your help!

Heidi said...

Anonymous,
Congratulations on your pregnancy! How exciting!!
I had completed one round of P90X before I got pregnant. I ended up getting really sick while I was pregnant and so I wasn't able to continue P90X like I had hoped. I was able to do it for a little while, though. (I continued to exercise throughout my whole pregnancy, it just wasn't P90X.) Since you are already in good shape, you can continue doing P90X as long as your body will allow. I did make some modifications, which you can read about here: http://p90xfamily.blogspot.com/2009/08/pregnancy-modifications.html
Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy! :D

You guys are AWESOME for sharing these shopping lists. What a giant help! Thanks and best wishes!

Wow just went to the grocery store and bought everything for phase 1 lvl 2, $315 dollars. Subtract $60 for spices and condiments, were you actually spending $255 per week on groceries?

Heidi said...

You will probably find that a lot of the foods will last you all month. P90X really tells you to buy/eat a lot of food! We ended up averaging $450 a month on groceries, and that was for two people and a toddler; but, we didn't buy everything on the list because it was just so much more food than we could eat. Ultimately, we bought about half of the items from the grocery lists and made what we wanted to with those foods.

Kelly said...

by chance have you put together a grocery list for phase 1 level 1?? if not, do you know where I can find one, or how do I adjust yours to level 1?

Heidi said...

Hi, Kelly.
We have not put together a grocery list for Phase 1 Level I. The main difference between the levels is that each level has additional recipes, so you could delete the ingredients from this grocery list that are for Level II recipes (refer to your Nutrition Guide to see which recipes those are); and/or, you could just buy less quantities of food.
I don't know where to find another grocery list, which is what prompted me to post our grocery lists.
I hope this helps. Good luck with P90X! :)

Wow... I know you put a lot of work into this, wish I would have found you a week ago! My husband and I created our grocery list for phase one, level's two and three combined. We shopped 5 different stores after price comparing to get rock bottom prices. We spend about $250 but that included some things that were on sale that we bought extra of knowing we'll need it.
When we get into phase 2, are your lists for two people in level 1? Also, beachbody pushes eating so much, do you think they have 3 levels depending on your size just for building muscle? But for weight loss you think eating at level one regardless of size is ok? Spending $800/month on groceries makes the budget so tight. (We used to spend $300!) When you say you have left over food, are you not eating strictly according to the plan? Thanks for your help!

Heidi said...

Hi, Beth!
All of our grocery lists are for one person, with the exception of the ingredients for the recipes that make more than one serving.
If you are wanting to lose weight, you will find that even Level I's lower calories is probably still too high. At least, for me it was. I ended up cutting my calories back to 1200-1400 a day in order to lose weight while doing P90X.
As far as left-over food goes, it was for a couple of reasons: 1. The serving sizes are larger than we were used to, so we couldn't eat the whole meal; and, 2. You don't use all of each ingredient that you buy (for example, you may use a couple of celery sticks instead of the whole stock, so you have the rest left over).
We didn't eat the lunches from the P90X nutrition guide, but we usually tried to eat the breakfasts and dinners as outlined. However, by the end of the 90 days, we used the recipes and grocery list more as a guide for what foods to use. That worked pretty well for us.

WOW! This is a HUGE help. I was sitting here at home trying to get a shopping list together when I realized, I bet somebody already has! I didn't expect to find such a great guide/list.

THANK YOU!

I have never commented on any board in the computer and have had a computer for decades. Heidi I just had to write to thank you for doing this. I purchased P90X months ago and was very exctied to get started until I realized I had to make a shopping list starting from scratch. It started it then just became so turned off by the fact they didnt provide this that I just shoved the whole package in a drawer and went back to my old life. Today I said I was determined to make this list. I was going to sit down and force myself to do this so I could get started. I was sick and tired of being overweight. Then I decided to google it and prayed someone had posted something. I couldnt believe it! Thank you so much for your work. It has given me the motivation to go to the store and get this goal started! Heidi you made my day, and very likely, my excistence, much more gratifiying. From the bottom of my heart. Thank you.

Thank you so much for the Grocery List! Is there a meal plan that goes with that? I mean like a calendar that shows what to eat on what day?

Thanks Again!

Randy

Heidi said...

Hi, Randy! Yes, there is a meal plan that goes along with the grocery lists. It is in the Nutrition Plan book that comes with P90X. As far as I know, this book comes with the kit and cannot be purchased separately.

Jeremy/Heidi,

Thank you for the information posted on this website! I noticed the blog start a while ago. I am wondering if you guys are still currently doing the P90X program? If so, how much more progress have you seen since you first competed the program the first time? I'm about to start the program and am curious as to how effective it will be. I don't need to lose weight (as I am already thin), but need to gain. Will the meal plan help to do this?

Chris

Heidi said...

Hi, Chris! Yes, we began P90X three years ago (I can't believe it's been that long!). It is very effective. We have not done it as consistently as we did that first and second round (I've also had a baby since we started), but we have still applied the knowledge that we gained while doing those rounds. We still exercise regularly and Jeremy has pretty much been able to maintain his "P90X results." As I said before, I have had a baby since we started this blog, so I am still working out some of those "issues," but I owe a lot of my quick post-baby recovery to my pre-pregnancy rounds of P90X. The first three months are the most difficult; but, we think maintaining your results is easier.

As for the food plan, I do believe that it will help you gain weight. I was trying to lose weight when we started P90X, but I wasn't losing any while doing Level I of the meal plan so I actually ended up eating less than it suggested. So if you eat as much as it suggests, I think you'll be just fine.
